Philippe Bernold began his musical studies in his hometown (Colmar) studying flute, then harmony and conducting under the direction of René Matter, disciple of Münch.
He entered the National Conservatory of Music of Paris, he obtained a brilliant First Flute Prize and was named the following year, at the age of 23, first solo flute of the Orchester de l'Opéra National de Lyon for 12 years.
In 1987, he won the First Grand Prix at the Jean-Pierre Rampal International Competition.
This distinction allows him to start a career as a soloist in the company of the most famous artists and orchestras: M. Rostropovitch, J.-P. Rampal, M. Nordmann, with the Orchestra de Paris, the F. Liszt Orchestra of Budapest, the Hallé of Manchester, Tapiola Sinfonietta, the National Orchestra of Lyon, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra ..., under the direction of S. Bychkov, JE Gardiner, L. Maazel, K. Nagano, Sir Y. Menuhin, M Inoue, T. Koopman, in concert halls such as the Royal Festival Hall in London, Salle Pleyel, Cologne Philharmonic, Warsaw, Théâtre du Châtelet, Bunka Kaikan Tokyo, Seoul Art Center, the great Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory Hall, as well as the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Cannes, Radio-France, Evian, Strasbourg, La Roque d'Anthéron, Sao ...
He returned to conducting in 1994 when he founded, encouraged by his master John Eliot Gardiner "The Virtuosos of the Lyon Opera". The success of this high-level ensemble is immediate.
He is recruited as trainee conductor at the Orchestra de Bretagne where he directs about twenty concerts during the 1999/2000 season. Then he is invited to lead ensembles such as Sinfonia Varsovia for the "Crazy Days" of Lisbon, Bilbao, Nantes and Warsaw, the National Opera Orchestra of Lyon at the International Festival of Colmar, the Auvergne Orchestra, the Opera Orchestra of Marseille and Toulon, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra many times, the Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra, Kanazawa Ensemble in Japan, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra, the Cappella Istropolitana, which he is the first guest conductor since 2003. For the channel Mezzo, Philippe Bernold directs the Sinfonia Varsovia and oboist Alexei Ogrintchouk in a Mozart program in 2008. He makes a series of three recordings with the Paris Chamber Orchestra for the label "New Horizons" whose first volume will be released soon . With this same orchestra Philippe Bernold will record next July the 2 concertos for flute, as well as the concerto for flute and harp by Mozart (Emmanuel Ceysson, harp) as soloist and conductor.
His first record earned him in 1989 the Grand Prix Academy Charles Cros. Since then, Philippe Bernold has made more than twenty recordings for Harmonia Mundi, EMI, Lyrinx (in duet with the late Catherine Collard). With the pianist Alexandre Tharaud, he made several recordings crowned "Shock" (World of Music) and the "Diapason d'Or". His last record with Ariane Jacob is named to the victories of the music.
Philippe Bernold is professor of chamber music and flute at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris.
